Australian delicacy

There’s an Australian delicacy that’s quite rare over here in Europe (well, at least in France and Germany). However last Saturday, there was a stand full of these goodies just down the street from me.

I’m sure you’re all thinking…Australian delicacy…hmm..kangaroo burgers? Crocodile ham? Koala steaks? Wrong wrong and wrong.

I’m talking about the humble TIM TAM. Ok, you might say well, Tim Tams aren’t Australian anymore; they’re American as Arnott’s is now American owned. But that’s beside the point. Tim Tams were born in Australia as far as I’m concerned!

What are Tim Tams? It’s basically a synonym for a little “slice of heaven”! Well, ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a little. It’s basically a chocolate cream biscuit sandwich enrobed by yet more chocolate! In other words, it’s the ultimate comfort food!

Anyway, over the weekend, my in-laws were in town and coincidentally, there was a huge street festival in our neighbourhood, where that particular Tim Tam-filled stand was. So naturally, I had to share a part of Australian heritage with them.

So, how much would you pay for a packet of Tim Tams?

I paid 5 euros!!!!! But it was worth every centime!

  3. wokandspoon,
A packet of TimTams for 5 euro? That's way too expensive. Anyway, TimTam can be quite addictive. I seldom buy them although I'm in Australia now.

  5. Mmm... now you're fulfilling the sweet creamy food group - after all those salads, WokandSpoon!
There are choco biscuits similar to Tim Tams in Switzerland but not your particular brand. Costs CHF3 to CHF5 (RM9 to RM15) a box or pack.
Did your in-laws like it? ;-)

  8. I've never heard of them, but in all my travels I have not been to Australia, either. They look delicious, but 5 Euros ... that seems a little out of my price range.

  9. Now I would have to go look for it too, never seem it before! Do you think we can get it in the U.S.?

  10. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Tim Tam! My favorite. Whenever I travel to Australia from SG, I would get a few packs (classic, and the darks) in the Au supermarket, though I know Sg has it. Love it!

  17. Cooking Ninja: You can find them in the UK in some supermarkets I think – for much cheaper than 5 euros! So far, I haven’t seen any in the supermarkets in Germany.

Isha: hehe – what about chocolate pizza?

Kok: Yep – 5 euros unfortunately!

SteamyKitchen: Hmmm…not sure if they sell them in the US ..they might!

Argus: The in-laws loved them! Especially my 14 year old brother in law! What are the choco biscuits in Switzerland called?

Retno: Hehe – diet? What diet??

EastMeetsWest: Yep – I crave them too. When I was much younger, we used to bite one end off, dip the biscuit in coffee or tea, then try to suck the drink up the biscuit before the whole thing crumbled to bits! Oh and thanks for the tag – I’ll have to check it out on your site!

    Kelly: They’re not usually 5 euros – in Australia, I think they’re about 2 dollars Australian…I think..can’t really remember – it’s been a while.

LittleCornerofMine: Not sure if you can find them in the US....

Tigerfish: hehe – Are they expensive in SG? I love the classic and the dark ones. Now you can get “double choc” ones – mmmmmm.

WanderingChopsticks: Hehe – Me too – Tim Tam over tofu!

Sharmi: I can’t keep chocolates in the fridge – they don’t last. As soon as I buy them, I have to eat them! That’s why I avoid buying them ;-)

LyricalLemongrass: Mmmmm, vegemite!! I don’t miss that as much because I can get marmite here….close enough ;-)

ExpeditedWriter: oooo, that’s like deep-fried mars bars! Heart-stopping! Thx for the link and I’ve popped you in my links too!

  25. I think I have heard about tim tam's on another blog. Never had it. Of course I won't get it in these parts. I'm glad you found a taste of home even if it was a pricey taste. Ah, but what is money when one yearns for comfort and something familiar.

  26. TummyThoz: Yep – they’re very dangerous – you can never eat just one!

Oh for the love of food : Hehe – ok. I admit – I have never bought Tim Tams by the carton! That’s crazy! I crown you KING of TimTams!

Lia: Hehe – um….try and find an Australian or maybe English shop – there might be some there ;-)

Patricia: I totally agree with you ;-)

Mandy: Hiya. Thx for stopping by. Glad to see that Tim Tams have fans around the world ;-) None in the US huh? Hmmm…this is an opportunity for a Tim Tam import business!

Cynthia: Thx for coming by as well. Yep – it’s the comfort food that I can’t pass by ;-)

  27. When we first came to UK, each time our kids watched the cast on Neighbours eating Tim Tams, we start to miss it so much. Everytime my sister or friends ask what we would like, I would say, "Tim Tams please".
Over the years, we have learnt to not miss it. The equivalent here is Penquins. Tim Tams are also available here in Tescos for about £1.39 per pkt.

  28. 5 euro wow so expensive, Timtam taste so yum yum, inside the chocolate cookies outside the chocolate coated, I used to buy this when I take some courses in Perth.

  29. Hi Judy: Thx for dropping by! I've had Penguins but I still like my Tim Tams! £1.39 is pretty cheap for a packet of Tim Tams this side of the world ;-)

Everything4sweets: Yep - I thought it was expensive too but it didn't stop me ;-)
